Hey there Quincy !
It’s been a busy one on my end, I recorded episode 77 of the #AskASoccerPro Show on Thursday, recorded the latest episode of ‘Quincy Talks’, and we just announced a negotiated formal partnership between an arm of the NFLPA, Players Coalition and Black Players for Change (formerly Black Players Coalition of MLS).
How to Take Responsibility for What’s Holding You Back
So, maybe you’re not happy with where you are in terms of your soccer skills, your life, achieving your goals. You’ve arrived at that place where you’re telling yourself, ‘something has to change.’ Maybe you’re feeling a bit stuck, and you don’t know where to start. All you know is that you’re being held back
The time to take responsibility for everything holding you back is now. It’s time for you to wake up and become aware of your complicity in your stagnation. It’s time to become aware of all the bad habits you’ve internalized, the ways you forget to write down important dates, failing to prepare appropriately for practice and games, and not valuing that which you know you should.
When something is valuable to us, we take care of it. Are you paying the same attention and care to the process of accomplishing your goals as you would a material possession that is valuable to you?
If your goals were precious to you, you would write them down, make a plan to pursue them… you would safeguard the time you need to ensure that you accomplish them. Instead, you’re allowing other people to tell you what you can achieve. When you believe them, you start doing things to sabotage yourself, and you lose the things that are most valuable to you. Self-sabotage is a cycle that many people fall into far too easily. They don’t believe in their ability to accomplish the goals they set for themselves.
Failing to take responsibility for your process of achieving your goals is dangerous. You pass the blame on to others; my parents won’t help me, my teammates don’t respect me, I’m worried I’ll be injured due to how far I need to walk to practice or school… You become the victim in your narrative. If you’re the victim, you have no power to change things, right?
How about we ‘flip the script’? What if all of those things that are preventing you from achieving your goals are actually making you stronger?
What if your parents refusing to help you is instead them testing your commitment and allowing you to reaffirm it daily? What if your teammates are demanding you to be better and earn respect? What if the extra workout you were gaining by walking to practice or school was making you more physically fit?
Stop passing the blame on to others and situations and instead, take responsibility for yourself and your accomplishing your own goals. You think everybody’s out to get you. Everybody’s attacking you. Everybody doesn’t believe in you, but maybe they see that you don’t believe in yourself.
It’s up to you to elevate yourself, to become better, and earn your goals and the respect of others. Maybe if they don’t believe in you, there is a reason.
So, prove them wrong. Make sure you’re putting in the work you know is necessary.
